Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway had viewers diving for the volume button this weekend, after one segment had an unexpected effect on dogs.

The brand new competition, Ring My Doorbell, challenges participants to sprint to their neighbour's front doors in the hopes of winning a £500 cash prize.

The exciting segment was all fun and games until the sound of doorbells started riling up the perplexed pooches watching from home.

Dog-owners tweeted Ant and Dec to let them know that the game had been driving their furry friends wild.

One tweeted: "Watching the new ring doorbell game on #SaturdayNightTakeaway and it’s setting the dogs off every minute as they think someone’s at the door 😂😂".

Another wrote: "@antanddec loved the ring my bell segment. But I hate you because my dogs been non stop barking for the past 15 minutes 🙄 #ringmybell #saturdaynighttakeaway".

A third viewer asked: "Is @antanddec #SaturdayNightTakeaway sending everyone’s dogs crazy with the ring go doorbells🤣 "

And another complained: "#SaturdayNightTakeaway loved ring my doorbell but now have barking dogs as they think we have visitors 😂"

Eventually, Ant and Dec took to Twitter themselves to apologise to viewers at home for the mayhem they had caused.

They wrote: "Apologies to Britain’s dog owners for tonight’s ‘Ring My Bell’ segment 😂 🐶 😂🐶 #SaturdayNightTakeaway"

Replying to their apology, viewers assured the presenters that it was all in good fun, sending in adorable photos of their confused pups.

"Lol my dogs loved it!!! 😂" wrote one fan, sharing a clip of her pet's reaction.

"Winston was not amused 🤣🤣🤣🤣" replied another, adding a photo of his poor dog Winston.

"Omg mine were going mental! I had to keep opening the front door to show them there was no-one there!" revealed a third.

ITV has been contacted for a comment.

Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway continues on Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
