Ryanair issues warning to holidaymakers on strict hand luggage restrictions

The budget airline has gained a reputation for being very strict when it comes to liquid and baggage allowance

When jetting off from the UK, Ryanair is one of the strictest airlines when it comes to your liquid and baggage allowance.

While some airlines will let you take on a bag that fits under your seat and a small bag that fits in the overhead locker for no extra charge, Ryanair is firmly not one of them.

They allow strictly one bag that fits under your seat - anything extra will mean you have to pay extra.

Speaking from experience, don't even bother trying to get away with it - the airline staff will sniff you out and fine you anywhere between £46 - £70 depending on the size of it.

And that's each way.

Travellers have been attempting to out-savvy airlines in recent times, with viral social media hacks encouraging people to think of wacky ways to sneak more luggage on board.

One of the most prolific has been known as the 'pillow hack' - whereby passengers take the stuffing out of a neck pillow or sleeping pillow and replace it with extra clothes, underwear or anything soft.

Judging by TikTok videos - a fair few got away with it, but one woman went viral recently when she shared footage of a man who refused to back down when his plan was foiled at the boarding gate - and he was left unable to fly.

Since then, people are being urged to only take the advice on tips and tricks from experts and airline staff.

So, it comes as little surprise that following news that the 100ml liquid rule is set to be scrapped across UK airports, Ryanair has issued a statement warning customers that, at the moment, the old rules still apply at most airports.

On the 30 May, Ryanair said in an email to customers (as reported by The Sun): "We want to remind passengers that despite upcoming changes to the rule, the 100ml limit on liquids STILL APPLIES across UK airports and will begin to be phased out starting June 1, 2024.

"We ask all passengers travelling through UK airports in the coming months to please consult the website of airport for most accurate and up to date information on the liquids policy.

"Please check the websites of all airports you will depart from on your trip as policies will vary.

"We advise you to adhere to the policy of each airport to avoid delays in security. Kind regards, Ryanair Customer Service."

As of today (12 June), the Ryanair website continues to state that 'each item of Liquid carried must be in a container of no more than 100ml'.

It's not worth the risk, so it's always best to check the rules of your individual airline and airport before flying.
