Who is actually eligible for invite to Wimbledon’s royal box after strict set of rules for entry revealed

When it comes to getting an exclusive view at Wimbledon, the Royal Box reigns supreme

The Royal Box at Wimbledon is one of the most exclusive seating areas in sport, and only certain people are eligible to sit there.

Wimbledon 2025 began on 30 June, and, just like previous years, spectators watching from the court and those at home watching on TV can expect to see a number of recognisable faces in the 74-seat area inside Centre Court.

Kate Middleton is a tennis fan and is usually spotted at Wimbledon each year. The Princess of Wales is also the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, so we can safely assume she'll be securing a prime seat each year.

But how are other people, namely celebrities like Jodie Foster and John Cena, plus faces you probably won't recognise, able to snag a seat?

Who is eligible to sit in the Royal Box at Wimbledon?

While the name suggests otherwise, the Royal Box hosts more than just royalty. Other regulars include serious tennis fans, such as Sir David Beckham and Sir David Attenborough. This year, fans have seen famous faces like pop icon Olivia Rodrigo, who sat in the suite just a few days after headlining Glastonbury.

This 74-seating area is, however, invitation only, at the discretion of the Chairman of the All England Club. So, don’t bother trying to find tickets online. The space has been used as a fancy seating area since 1922 for ‘British and overseas Royal Families,’ plus ‘heads of government, people from the world of tennis, commercial partners, British armed forces, prominent media organisations, supporters of British tennis and other walks of life,’ according to the Wimbledon website.

For the chosen few invited to the Royal Box, they have to adhere to the strict dress code to ensure they can actually sit on one of the dark green Lloyd Loom wicker chairs.

Wimbledon is famous for tennis, of course, however, the tournament is also known for its strict rules. Competitors must adhere to a strict all-white dress code due to Victorian traditions, but officials have made some exceptions regarding undergarments in recent years.

Guests sitting alongside royals and other VIPs in the Royal Box must also abide by a dress code ‘protocol’ to sit and watch a match. And according to Wimbledon’s official website, this means smart clothes only.

Smart attire is required, consisting of a jacket and tie for men, and an afternoon dress or ‘elegant’ trouser suit for women. Even Prince George wore a suit and tie when he watched his first Wimbledon tournament in 2022.

At Wimbledon, Centre Court may host the world's best tennis, but the Royal Box is where only the most select few ever get to sit. It doesn't get more exclusive than this!
