Queen Camilla made an appearance at Wimbledon on Wednesday, though one detail sparked frustration among some viewers.

The 77-year-old greeted tennis legend Novak Djokovic and met staff before watching the quarter finals from the Royal Box on Centre Court.

Wimbledon 2025 kicked off on 30 June, and, just like previous years, spectators watching from the court and those at home watching on TV can expect to see a number of recognisable faces in the 74-seat area inside Centre Court, including royalty.

Camilla was joined by her sister, Annabel Elliot, and Debbie Jevans, the chair of the All England Club, in the front row. Meanwhile, Love, Actually’s fictional prime minister, Hugh Grant, was also in attendance, though some reckon he was spotted ‘dozing off’ during the match between Djokovic and Flavio Cobolli.

“There was no more fitting guest in the Royal Box than Her Majesty The Queen, who was accompanied by her sister Annabel Elliot,” Wimbledon said in its roundup.

One particular detail that has irked royal watchers, though, is the reference to Queen Camilla simply as 'The Queen', a title many still instinctively associate with the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Some hold a staunch belief that she is, in fact, officially known as Queen Consort, however this is false.

“Camilla...it's Queen Camilla not 'the' queen,” said one royal follower on Twitter.

“She is not "The Queen", Camilla is the Queen Consort,” declared another outraged social media user.

“When I heard the word Queen, I immediately thought of Elizabeth. Still can’t get my head around Camilla being Queen,” a third person posted.

Camilla became Queen Consort on 8 September, 2022, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of King Charles III to the throne.

‘Consort’ was dropped from her title on 6 May, 2023, the day of King Charles III’s coronation, and she is now referred to as Queen Camilla.

This shift in title reflected her formal role, and followed guidance from Buckingham Palace, which began referring to her publicly as ‘The Queen’.

After the coronation, Camilla has been styled as ‘Her Majesty The Queen’ or ‘Her Majesty Queen Camilla’, including on her page on the Royal Family’s official website.

Although some people may struggle to accept Camilla's new title, it is now firmly part of royal protocol.

Who can sit in the Royal Box?

This exclusive 74-seating area is not just reserved for royalty despite its name, but it is invitation only at the discretion of the Chairman of the All England Club.

So, don’t bother trying to find tickets online!

The space has been used as a fancy seating area since 1922 for ‘British and overseas Royal Families,’ plus ‘heads of government, people from the world of tennis, commercial partners, British armed forces, prominent media organisations, supporters of British tennis and other walks of life,’ according to the Wimbledon website.
