King Charles has provided royal fans with rare insight regarding his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, and how she spent her final days.

The Queen passed away in Balmoral at the age of 96 on 8 September 2022.

She was then transported to Westminster on 14 September, where she lay in state for four days, allowing people to pay their respects to the longest-reigning monarch.

Footage was shared of her grandsons, Prince William and Prince Harry, alongside their wives Princess Kate and Meghan Markle, holding back the tears as they stood beside the coffin.

Following her death, her son Prince Charles became King, and his wife, Camilla, became Queen.

On Queen Elizabeth's decision to spend her final day in Balmoral, King Charles said during a Scottish Parliament speech opening on 30 Sep: "Speaking from a personal perspective, Scotland has always had a uniquely special place in the hearts of my family and myself.

"My late mother especially treasured the time spent at Balmoral, and it was there, in the most beloved of places, where she chose to spend her final days.”

The late monarch's daughter, Princess Anne, previously shared that it was important to the Queen where she would spend her last days.

In 2023 BBC documentary Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen, Anne shared: "We did try and persuade her that that shouldn't be part of the decision-making process.

"I hope she felt that that was right in the end, because I think we did."

Following her death, Charles gave a heartfelt statement regarding his 'beloved mother.'

He said: "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all my family members.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

The royal family initially announced the death of the much-loved monarch in a post shared to social media platform X on the day of her passing that read: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
