King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

Earlier this month, the 75-year-old underwent surgery on an enlarged prostate as a 'corrective procedure', with the palace saying his condition was benign.

However, the surgery identified a 'separate issue of concern', with tests confirming that the royal has cancer.

No further details are being shared at this stage, including the type and stage of cancer or a prognosis.

Charles will be stepping back from public-facing duties as he begins treatment, although he will continue in his constitutional role through paperwork and private meetings.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: "During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted.

"Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

"Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual."

The palace said Charles has chosen to speak out about his health in the hope that it will help raise 'understanding' of those affected by cancer, while also preventing any speculation.

It added: "The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.

"He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."

According to the Press Association news agency, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has spoken to the King about his cancer diagnosis, with a source 'close to' the royal saying he plans to travel to the UK to see him in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has wished the King a 'full and speedy recovery', saying he has no doubt that he will be 'be back to full strength in no time'.

He added: "I know the full country will be wishing him well."

Charles has now been on the throne for 16 months, following the death of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96.

He underwent surgery at a private London hospital just over a week ago, saying at the time that he was going public about the procedure in the hope of encouraging more men to get prostate checks.
