As President of the most notoriously patriotic nation, you'd expect Donald Trump to have delivered a speech for the history books this Memorial Day weekend.

Unfortunately, however, the statement shared by the Republican leader is doing the rounds for all the wrong reasons.

For those in need of a reminder, Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the US. Celebrated on the last Monday of May, the occasion is intended to commemorate the American armed forces personnel whose lives have been lost in battle.

Taking to Truth Social yesterday (25 May), however, it took Trump two attempts to even reference any fallen soldiers.

In his first post, shared at around 6am ET, the 79-year-old took aim at his political enemies, coming for left-wing voters with a slew of slanderous remarks.

Without pausing for breath, Trump wrote: "I laugh at all of the Dumocrats, RINOS, and Fools who know nothing about the potential deal I am making with Iran, things that haven’t even been negotiated yet, weak and ineffective people like failed Senator Thom Tillis (Soon out of office!), Bill Cassidy, who just suffered a massive Primary loss, really bad Congressman Thomas Massie, a major sleazebag who lost in a landslide to a great American Patriot (Endorsed by “TRUMP”) after showing tremendous disloyalty to his Party (and Country!)."

He went on to add: "And almost all Dumocrats, people that have totally lost their way, constantly supporting bad policy and even worse candidates, but are constantly critical of each and every fantastic win I have.

"These people should go home and rest, they do nothing but create division and loss. In other words, they are losers!"

Trump concluded: "The deal with Iran will either be a great and meaningful one, or there will be no deal. It will be the exact opposite of the JCPOA disaster negotiated by the failed Obama Administration, which was a direct and open path to a Nuclear Weapon for Iran.

"No, I don’t do deals like that!"

It wasn't until Trump shared a second post, almost 20 minutes later, that he seemed to recall the significance of the day.

"Happy Memorial Day to all, including the Dumocrats, who disrespect our Military and all of the tremendous success that it has had over the last year," he wrote, still digs as his opponents. "God Bless those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.

"I love you all! President DONALD J. TRUMP."

The right-wing leader refused to stop there, however. Just over 10 minutes later, he penned a third message.

"The Dumocrats have BAD POLICY, AND BAD CANDIDATES," Trump continued. "Other than that, they are doing quite well! President DJT."

Unsurprisingly, Trump's handling of the day didn't go down too well with a number of onlookers, who slammed his statement as 'unpresidential'.

"I think the best way to have spent this day would’ve been by simply honouring those who this day was about … don’t you think?!?" one internet user hit out.

Another agreed: "What an unpresidential president!! I do not even have the words anymore…"

"What is wrong with this man??" a third questioned.

"What a way to honour those who have died for our Country, complaining about his political opponents," a fourth continued. "What a stand-up guy."
