The Queen will have reigned for 70 years (which is the longest of any British sovereign) on 6th February 2022, but celebrations will be postponed until June to offer a better chance of sunny weather.

Queen Elizabeth first acceded to the throne at the age of just 25 following the death of her father, George VI, on 6 February 1952.

For the four-day celebration, the late May bank holiday will be shifted to Thursday 2nd June, while another bank hol will be created on Friday 3rd June, making the weekend into a whopping four day celebration.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: "The Platinum Jubilee offers an opportunity for the Queen to express her thanks for the support and loyalty Her Majesty has received throughout her reign.

"The Queen hopes that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to join the celebrations."

Members of the Royal Family will also be taking part in a series of celebrations over the four days and a Platinum Jubilee medal will be awarded to those in public services, including members of the Armed Forces, emergency services and prison services.

Speaking about the news, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment - and one that deserves a celebration to remember.

"We can all look forward to a special, four-day Jubilee weekend, when we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology.

"It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty's reign."

The celebrations are being organised by both The Royal Household and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, with more details to follow in the coming months.
