Jane Fonda announces her cancer is in remission

It's her birthday next week and she said it was the best present she could have asked for

Jane Fonda has revealed the brilliant news that her cancer is now in remission.

The Hollywood icon, 84, made the happy announcement on her blog on Thursday (15 December), where she said that she's been given the green light to stop chemotherapy.

Fonda, who turns 85 next week, was being treated for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

She wrote: "I am feeling so blessed, so fortunate. I thank all of you who prayed and sent good thoughts my way. I am confident that it played a role in the good news."

Appropriately, she titled the blog post: "BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER!!!"

The actor said it was particularly welcome news as she'd had a hard time with her last chemotherapy treatment despite the first four being 'rather easy for me'.

She continued: "The last chemo session was rough and lasted 2 weeks making it hard to accomplish much of anything."

However, while the actress was struggling with the effects of the treatment, she still managed to find time to support a cause close to her heart by attending a climate change rally in Washington.

The happy announcement comes after the star speculated that she wasn't 'going to be around for much longer' after her diagnosis.

She told Entertainment Tonight: "When you get to be my age, you better be aware of the amount of time that is behind you, as opposed to in front of you. I mean, that's just realistic.

"I'm ready. I've had a great life. Not that I want to go, but I'm aware that it's going to be sooner rather than later."

Fonda first revealed that she had cancer in September of this year, and while she has had pessimistic moments, she did say at the time that her odds of survival were good.

This was because, she admitted, she had 'health insurance and access to the best doctors and treatments.'

Fonda also attempted to use her platform for good after being given the frightening diagnosis and said that more celebrities should be talking about cancer.

Fonda said she's a realist about how much time she's got left.

She wrote at the time: "Almost every family in America has had to deal with cancer at one time or another and far too many don't have access to the quality health care I am receiving and this is not right.

"We also need to be talking much more not just about cures but about causes so we can eliminate them.

"For example, people need to know that fossil fuels cause cancer. So do pesticides, many of which are fossil fuel-based, like mine.

"Believe me, I will not let any of this interfere with my climate activism."
