Where Brian Laundrie’s family are now as divisive Gabby Petito doc throws spotlight on them once more

The true-crime docu-series, American Murder: Gabby Petito, was released on Netflix last week (17 February)

It's been about a week since the release of the Netflix documentary American Murder: Gabby Petito, and many have been wondering where Brian Laundrie's parents are now and what they had to say about the harrowing docu-series.

The true crime documentary American Murder: Gabby Petito, which was released last week (17 February), follows the tragic story of the aspiring vlogger who was found dead in 2021.

Authorities later discovered Petito was murdered by her fiancé Brian Laundrie, and the Laundrie family has been scrutinised ever since, as they remained notably tight-lipped throughout the entire case.

What happened to Gabby Petito?

On the 12th August 2021, a reported domestic violence incident took place between Petito and her fiancé, Laundrie, in Utah, prompting police to arrange for the couple to separate for one night.

Just two weeks later, however, Petito disappeared.

After an extensive search mission, the 22-year-old's body was found at the Spread Creek camping area in Wyoming and, just a month after that, Laundrie's remains were found, with the FBI saying he confessed to committing the murder in a note and died by suicide.

Brian Laundrie's sister's response to the Netflix doc

Laundrie's older sister Cassie has since broken her silence following the release of the Netflix documentary, claiming that she didn't know anything about Petito's disappearance until police called.

"No one from any family contacted me until Detective Barry called me," she recently wrote on Instagram, hitting back at claims made by Suffolk County detective Tracey Barry. "Det. Barry gravely miscommunicated what I told her on the phone."

The same profile - which belongs to a 'Cassie Laundrie' and has the username @voe.qt - has also denied telling law enforcement about her brother talking about leaving Petito at a Wyoming hotel before he flew home to Florida without her.

The account, which appears to be Cassie, also made sure to share that she is estranged from her and Laundrie's parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie.

"If you’re new here. And just starting to attack me today. I’ve been non contact with my parents for almost two years. Have fun," she added.

Laundrie's parents were heavily criticised and there has been widespread speculation over how much they knew of his crime, as they hired an attorney for their son quickly after the killing supposedly took place.

Steven Bertolino - an attorney for Roberta and Chris Laundrie - reportedly told The Sun US this week that, although the documentary was formatted how the family had expected, they do not believe their portrayal is fair.

"One perspective depicted as the 'truth' as seen through their lens," the lawyer told the publication. "Similar to Republicans and Democrats fighting it out lately."

Bertolino continued: "Each side believes their perspective is correct. Hard to see through the lens of the other with all the noise and distrust.

"To be clear though, there were no contradictions by my clients Chris and Roberta Laundrie."

He added that the doc 'contained many inaccuracies, incorrect juxtapositions of timelines, and misstatements and omissions of fact', suggesting that this could have been 'deliberate to capture their 'truth'', or 'due to simple error'.

"We all know Brian took Gabby's life and Brian then took his own as well. Let the parents of both Gabby and Brian mourn them in peace."

Where are Roberta and Chris Laundrie now?

Ever since Laundrie was found responsible for Petito's death, his parents have remained out of the spotlight.

In 2022, Petito's parents filed a lawsuit against them for at least $100,000 in damages, claiming they'd assisted their son in the cover-up of her murder and knew she was dead.

The Laundries denied these allegations, and in 2024, the case was settled out of court.

The Petitos said that after a 'long day of mediation', all parties had 'reluctantly agreed' to the deal to 'avoid further legal expenses and prolonged personal conflict', as per the BBC.

The business that the Laundries ran prior to Gabby's murder - Juicer Services Inc., a firm selling and servicing commercial juicing devices - is now listed as 'permanently closed' on Google.

According to HELLO!, the couple still live in North Port, Florida.
