Chris Evans Just Escorted Regina King To Collect Her Oscar And Twitter Is Swooning
The Captain America star wasn't nominated himself, but did present the Best Production Design award with Jennifer Lopez on the night and stepped in to help Regina as she took the stairs to the stage to pick up her award.
The winning actress scooped the best supporting actress award for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. The film was adapted from James Baldwin's 1974 novel of the same title and was director Barry Jenkins' follow-up to the Oscar-winning Moonlight.
Regina was cast as Sharon Rivers, the mother of lead character Tish (played by actress, KiKi Layne).
It was Regina's first Oscar nomination after previously doing mainly TV projects and she triumphed in a field including Amy Adams, who played Dick Cheney's wife Lynne in Vice, and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone who played Sarah Churchill and Abigail Masham, respectively, in The Favourite.
Regina was the strong favourite for the award after taking the Golden Globe for best supporting actress.
When her name was read out and she stood, her Oscar de la Renta gown snagged on her heel.
But Evans, sitting just a few seats away from her and wearing a dapper teal, velvet blazer, jumped from his seat to lend a hand and a supportive arm and help her ascend the stage to collect her Oscar.
In her emotional speech she paid tribute to James Baldwin labelling him: "one of the greatest artists of our time". She also said that director Jenkins, "nurtured" the original story and was pivotal in, "nurturing her and supporting her with so much love and support".
She said she was standing on stage: "as an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone".
Regina then addressed her mother, who accompanied her daughter to the event, saying she loved her and thanking her for teaching her about God's abiding faith in her.
"God is good all the time," she concluded.
