Woman left raging after bridesmaid named baby after her without asking for permission

Woman left raging after bridesmaid named baby after her without asking for permission

She took to Reddit to vent her frustrations

A woman was left raging after her bridesmaid named her baby after her without asking for permission first.

She took to Reddit's popular 'Am I the A**hole' thread to provide a little more context behind the ordeal and, let's just say, people did not told back with their verdicts on the matter.

The woman began by explaining she 'had' a friend in her early 20s named Melinda.

The Reddit user claimed Melinda was 'always a little odd', however they still 'remained friends' for a while and were bridesmaids in each other's weddings.

"We grew apart over the next decades as our lives took different turns," the woman continued. "We did stay in contact via the odd text and Facebook post.

"She attended my virtual baby shower back in 2021."

The woman went on to reveal that Melinda recently had a baby girl and announced her name was 'Amelia' but that they would refer to her as 'Mia'.

"I found this odd as my name is Mia," she admitted. "I felt as if she were naming her child after me and we didn’t feel close enough for that, plus she didn’t even ask."

Double-checking she wasn't the only one who found the situation a tad bizarre, the Reddit user mentioned the issue to a mutual friend who also revealed they 'found it odd'.

She carried on: "I didn’t say anything at first. Then I saw Melinda with her husband and the baby at another friend’s party. She was showing me the baby and I half-joked 'Yeah, my namesake'.

Responding to the comment, Melinda then gave her an 'odd look' to which she explained: "Her name is Mia… I’m Mia."

Melinda then hit back saying the baby's name was Amelia and Mia was a 'nickname' while her full name is 'just Mia'.

"I said I understand, but she still had to have named her after me, saying it was odd but cute."

Melinda then got a 'weird look' on her face and replied: "No, we named her after (her husband)‘s mother," to which the woman simply nodded as Melinda was 'clearly annoyed'.

"She asked why I assumed I named the baby after her," the Reddit user went on. "I said it was just a weird coincidence and seemed like something she would do. Melinda said, 'You’re not important enough for me to name a baby after'. I told her that was rude and she said, 'So is trying to imply she’s odd because her baby and I have the same name'.

"Our mutual friends feel I shouldn’t have brought it up at all. Some feel that in spite of that, she took it too far by saying I’m not important enough."

People pointed out the woman doesn't 'own' the name.

The woman finished up the post asking if she was the 'a**hole' in the situation and the majority of people seemed to think she was.

One Reddit user penned: "You don't own the name, so she doesn't need to be 'close enough' to you to decide to use it as a nickname, regardless of the reason.

"The world does not revolve around you. Why are you upset that she thinks you're not important enough in her life to name a baby after you when you also think that?

"You literally noted that you're not close enough to each other for that, so you should be glad that she confirmed she feels the same way."

A second slammed: "People can have the same name, and her name isn't even Mia, its just short for her real name. You should have at least asked about her name before assuming things, or just not brought it up at all."

"It’s not like you have your unique name or like that’s even a unique nickname," echoed a final Reddit user. "Admittedly you guys aren’t even close… why would you think you are even a thought when she named her child?"

What do you make of it?
