Parents announce newborn's name to the world but it doesn’t go as expected

The US mum and dad shared the controversial name choice on a billboard for all to see

When it comes to giving a name to your beautiful newborn baby, you simply can't please everyone.

And no one is more painfully aware of that than a couple of first-time parents in the US, who recently welcomed a baby girl, only to spark a colossal wave of backlash from social media users.

As we say, giving your newborn child a moniker can be tricky business.

Even though you've had nine long months to decide on your favourite names, someone will always make a point of slandering your choices of option.

It's always, 'Oh God, I went to high school with a girl with that name and she used to pick her nose', or 'You do know your ex-boyfriend has named his child that, right?'.

I mean, credit where credit is due to those parents who simply don't give a s**t about the opinions of others, and go on to name their child what they want... to an extent, that is.

Because one set of parents living in the US have criticised online for the controversial name they have given their daughter.

Excited to announce their selected moniker, the new mum and dad even went as far as to have a billboard arranged in their home state of Colorado, revealing the name.

'Welcome to the world Annaly, 7lbs 10oz,' the sign - erected outside Intermountain Health's Bloomin' Babies Birth Center - read.

Though the name apparently has a surprisingly sweet origin - which we'll get onto later - a snap of the billboard has since gone viral on social media, with the vast majority of viewers seemingly unable to fathom such a name choice.

Taking to Reddit, the original poster penned in the caption of the photo: "You can't make this up - This is an actual birth announcement sign in my town."

"Not the traditional way to give birth, but I guess to each their own!" one viewer teased.

Another went on to jibe: "Brings a new meaning to dropping the kids off at the pool."

A third said: "That poor kid's gonna get so mercilessly bullied..."

Someone else joked: "Spoken by someone who doesn’t know about fourth-degree perineal tearing.

"Some kids do tear mom a new a**hole. Call your mom. Maybe apologize."

All jokes aside, according to Nice Baby Name, the moniker 'Annaly' is of Irish origin, and is actually a variation of the girl's name Annaleigh, meaning both 'light' and 'grace'.

"It is a perfect choice for parents looking for a unique and timeless name for their daughter," the website states.
