Mum-to-be outraged by 'offensive' gift husband received at baby shower

Dads on social have also been left fuming by the gift.

A mum-to-be has shared her outrage after her husband was given a gift that has been deemed ‘offensive’ by social media users.

The unnamed woman took to Reddit to share a photo of the onesie a family member purchased for the couple’s baby that read ‘Daddy-proof Shirt’ on the front.

A photo of the gift was shared on Reddit.

Arrows are used to illustrate where dads should put the baby’s head and arms and there’s also an arrow showing were the ‘snap’ buttons are to fasten the onesie.

“This 'gift' my husband received at our baby shower,” she wrote in the caption alongside the picture.

After sharing the picture of the gift, a debate erupted in the comments around the perceptions of dads being ‘dumb’ and the stereotype around dads being ‘incompetent’.

A Reddit user offered a solution regarding the outrage to the shirt’s message. “Why can't it just say ‘idiot proof shirt’. Still make the joke without implying that dads are less parent than moms.”

Someone else complained: “The entire ‘husbands are idiots’ trope is gross.”

One man commented: “I get comments like this when I'm out with my girls a lot too. Wife and I work opposite schedules so it's usually just me out with them. Fathers are really treated differently for some reason. They're my children also, me spending time with them isn't some weird miracle or me doing a favour for my wife.”

Dads commented how often they're called 'babysitters'.

A response to this comment read: “Lost track of ‘Oh, daddy’s babysitting today?’ comments I’ve gotten. No? I’m parenting.”

One dad raised the issue of the lack of changing facilities for dads to use when out and about. He said: “Older dad now, but when my daughter was born 18 years ago, the thing that infuriated me was the lack of changing facilities in the men’s room. I’d usually have to put the changing pad in between the sinks and start changing her. If I was lucky, maybe one out of 10 stores/restaurants would be equipped.

"To this day, I still notice whether or not a men’s room has changing tables.”

The post sparked a debate on Reddit.

Even though there are more changing facilities for men to use, there still aren’t enough.

“I’ve been a dad six months and I’ve had this twice,” one man replied. “Once I was told I could use the ladies room upstairs and the second time I had to change my son on a window ledge.”

A Reddit user revealed they have also received a similar garment for their little one. “Yeah, my wife and I were given one of these at our baby shower by family members that have treated me like I’m an idiot just for being a man. I am so sick of the clueless dad stereotype. I actually have better instincts with the kids than my wife, but I guess I’m dumb cause I’m a man.”

There were also a few funny admissions in the comments. “Nervously laughs at the amount of times I've put one of these on back to front,” one dad admitted.
