Bus driver reveals the same mistake passengers make when ringing the bell

Bus driver reveals the same mistake passengers make when ringing the bell

They shared a TikTok video showing what happens when you ring the bell - and why you shouldn't ring it more than once

There's something about public transport that often brings out the worst in people.

Whether it's a school kid putting their feet on the seat opposite or some middle-aged bloke manspreading across two spots, what should be an easy journey often ends up fraught with frustration.

And it turns out it's not just fellow passengers that sometimes get wound up, with one bus driver revealing there's something many people are doing ALL wrong.

Ringing the bell when you approach your stop seems simple enough, but there's a big mistake that some tend to make.

Explaining how the exchange works from the perspective of the person behind the wheel, bus driver and TikToker (@tiddlywink03) said: "We always experience this as drivers."

Speaking on behalf of drivers up and down the country, @tiddlywink03 explained how, when you push the 'stop' button, there's a handy tool to let them know you want to get off - and no, we don't just mean their ears.

The official etiquette of disembarking a bus sees passengers press a little button as their stop nears.

On many vehicles, this not only makes a sound, but also makes a sign light up to let others know that the driver will be pulling in at the next bus stop.

However, all too often people get a bit trigger-happy, and either press the button several times just to make sure, or press it even if someone else already has.

According to @tiddlywink03, there's no sign to 'panic', as there's a key reason why the driver won't have missed the memo.

She filmed a video - which was posted a couple of years back - on board a stationary bus, showing as she pressed the button before walking towards the front.

The woman then leant into the driver's cab to reveal a little bell symbol that had appeared on the dashboard.

"So there is no need to do this, we know you want to be off at the next stop," she said.

"Don't panic."

Many others found this snippet of insight strangely fascinating, with one admitting they'd 'wanted to know this' for a while.

"Omg I was wondering this for years," another said.

Someone else said they kept pressing the button all the time because they 'just like the noise' while another mentioned their anxiety would have them worrying the driver 'didn't see it'.

"Then why does my bus driver always miss my stop?" another fumed.

I'm afraid we don't have the answer to that one...
