The time has come where we're all reigniting our love of Mean Girls once again.

It's 3 October today which is unofficially 'Mean Girls' day (if you know, you know) and it's clear fans of the hit 2004 chick flick couldn't wait to start sharing all their pearls of wisdom surrounding the beloved film.

And it seems one particular key detail managed to totally evade fans for more than 20 years after they only just discovered that stars Amy Poehler and Rachel McAdams have a 'crazy' age gap between them.

Fans of the iconic film are clearly shocked after finding out the age difference between McAdams and Poehler, realising that the two stars were much closer in age than their on-screen mother-daughter relationship may have suggested.

Now, as we know, the duo starred in the hit 2004 rom-com as Regina George and her mother, a self-titled 'cool mom' who loves velour tracksuits, has casual attitude to minors drinking, dishes out free condoms and enjoys a spot of provocative dancing.

And it turns out the actor behind the young-at-heart mum wasn’t actually that much older than her fictional daughter.

McAdams, who is now 45, was just 25 years old when the film was released in April 2004 – meaning she obviously had a fair few years on high school queen bee Regina.

But it turns out that she wasn’t that far off the age of Poehler, who is now 53.

When the movie his cinemas, the actor was just 32 – yep, seven years older than the woman playing her daughter.

After realising the surprisingly small age difference, one X user revealed: "Every now and then I think about how Amy Poehler was 33 in Mean Girls playing the mom of Racheal McAdams, who was 26. That’s so crazy lol."

"Hold up, Amy Poehler, who plays Rachel McAdams' mom in Mean Girls is only 7 years older than her in real life???? Cinema is a lie," exclaimed a second.

They added: "Amy was 32 when the movie was filmed. That’s not even really old enough to be the mother of a 17-year-old in real life unless she has a baby at 15. Wack."

Another echoed: "Amy Poehler playing Rachel McAdams's mom in Mean Girls when they were only 7 years apart is still so funny."

"I just realised Amy Poehler is only 6 years older than Rachel McAdams in Mean Girls, and nothing else matters now," admitted a final X user.

McAdams is also seven years older than co-star Lindsay Logan, who was 17 when the classic flick was released.

Back in 2020, McAdams admitted she’d be open to reprising the now-iconic role, which is, of course, music to our ears.

A fan had asked her which of her characters she would most want to play again if she had the opportunity during a Q&A.

"I always want to go back and do all of them again," McAdams said.

"You really fall in love with them. I mean, it would be fun to play Regina George later in life and see where life took her after Mean Girls."

We can see it now: an older, mum version of The Plastics leader, dressed in a pink two-piece and filming a new generation of mean girls at the North Shore High dance competition.

Her girls keep her young, after all.
