For decades, the biggest names in Hollywood have used the annual Golden Globes as an excuse for securing themselves - and their mesmerising looks - a newspaper front page cover.
Like the Academy Awards, the Grammys and the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes truly celebrate the best of the best, with the ceremony hosting the most talented actors on the planet right now, as well as the cast and crew that support their successes.
It's no surprise, therefore, that months of planning often goes into crafting the perfect red carpet gown, or tailoring a tuxedo so fine it could grind the whole show to a halt, with many A-listers opting for increasingly abstract shapes, colours, textures and styles year after year.
When it came to the 2026 edition, however, a rather sombre shift in mood seemed to occur, with many of the most vibrant stars selecting black get-ups.

Ariana Grande, for example - who we've rarely spotted in any colour aside from pink since she began filming magical musical Wicked three years ago - donned a black Vivienne Westwood Couture gown.
The same went for Miley Cyrus - who usually goes for something something short, sharp and sparkling - and who this year chose a black sequined Saint Laurent gown by Anthony Vaccarello.

Lead Actor in a Comedy or Musical winner Timothée Chalamet also opted for a rather low-key black suit, complimenting Frankenstein actress Mia Goth, who went for the same shade.
Wednesday's Jenna Ortega also chose a sideless black number, alongside Teyana Taylor, who left the Golden Globes with the Best Supporting Actress award for thrilling action-comedy One Battle After Another.

When it came to why so many stars chose black outfits for this year's ceremony, a number of online conspiracy theories have been contrived - including one that alleges this year's stream of stars are actually commemorating a major loss.
After the collection of black garments were shared online, one Instagram user claimed: "Because this country is in mourning."
And apparently, it's not a crazy suggestion, with another user agreeing: "I literally just said this in my head word for word! Accurate."
"Came here to say the same exact thing," a third added.
Whilst the tongue-in-cheek remark doesn't quite allude to what this year's winners could be mourning, given the explicitly liberal views of many in an increasingly less tolerant America, it could be a political reference aimed at Donald Trump, who has hit headlines for a handful of reasons in the last month.

This list includes, but is not limited to, his 'serious' plans to 'take over' Greenland, his detainment of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, and his removal of the United States from dozens of international and United Nations entities.
It also includes and his team's controversial response to the fatal shooting of a Minnesota citizen by an ICE agent.
Whilst we're certainly not agreeing that this is the main reason why so many stars opted for funeral-esque get-ups, it doesn't seem crazy to suggest that the famously liberal Hollywood elite could be making a political point about what they see as the death of traditional American values.
