Gavin and Stacey writers and stars James Cordon and Ruth Jones have today announced that the much-loved BBC sit-com will be returning later this year for its final ever episode.

The news comes just months after initial speculation began, when Deadline reported that the comedy hit - also starring Joanna Page and Mathew Horne - would be hitting our screens once again with a new episode.

The publication claimed that the one-off would be filmed over the course of the summer and will air at Christmas, five years after the last instalment.

Deadline also reported that the 'majority of the main cast' - which also stars Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Julia Davis - are set to return to the show.

Fans of the show might recall that the last episode, filmed back in 2019, saw Nessa (Jones) getting down on one knee and asking Smithy (Corden) to marry her.

Much to producers' delight, the previous one-off special become the most-watched TV show in a decade, raking in a surplus of 18 million viewers.

And having ended on a nail-biting cliffhanger, fans of the show - which first aired all the way back in 2007 - were desperately hoping for a follow-up series, revealing whether Smithy and Nessa's on-off romance ever reached its happy ending.

And on top of that, viewer STILL don't know what went down between Uncle Bryn and his nephew Jason on that notorious fishing trip.

Bryn became so close to finally addressing the speculation during the last special - leaving viewers on the edge of their seats - before the family's kids came charging in demanding to open their selection boxes.

At the time of the last instalment taking to our screens, co-writer Ruth said there was room for more episodes but it was just 'so complicated for me and James to get together to write', somewhat dashing fans' hope of a reunion.

In a snap posted to Instagram this morning, however, the creating duo shared a photo of a script confirming the news and leaving us with hope that these questions might FINALLY be answered.

"Some news… It’s official!!!" James penned. "We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey.

"See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James".

And by the sounds of things, fans of the show are delighted with the news.

"Well it’s about fffing time James. She’s been on one knee for what? 2 or 3 years?" one penned in the comments on the recent upload.

Another wrote: "Oh my Christ! Please…we HAVE to know what went down on the fishing trip"
