Britain’s Got Talent viewers shocked to learn ‘wild’ stat after winner crowned

Britain’s Got Talent viewers shocked to learn ‘wild’ stat after winner crowned

Sydnie Christmas taking home the crown has made Britain's Got Talent history

Viewers of Britain's Got Talent saw Sydnie Christmas crowned as the winner during last night's finale - and her taking of the crown has unearthed a shocking statistic.

The 28-year-old singer crooned her way to the crown last night (2 June) by belting out 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow', and beating rival contestant Jack Rhodes.

Christmas had previously been given the 'golden buzzer' treatment by judge Amanda Holden, which secured her place in the final upon her first audition.

As the winner, Christmas takes home the £250,000 cash prize and has secured a performance slot at the forthcoming Royal Variety Show.

Christmas was a clear deserving winner, but some viewers have drawn attention to the fact she has a professional background in performing, which some have suggested meant she was always fated to win the show.

Despite the naysayers, one viewer summed it up perfectly when posting on X: "Sydnie Christmas is phenomenal. Glad she won. A phenomenal singer. She’s got an incredible career ahead of her. Can’t wait to see what happens to her next."

Christmas' win has drawn attention to a little known fact that has blown viewers' minds this morning.

It turns out that as the winner, Christmas is the only woman winner in the show's history that has competed without a dog.

For example, Ashleigh and Pudsey won in 2012, thanks to Pudsey's amazing ability to learn tricks.

But a solo woman act has never before won the talent show.

One person cited Susan Boyle, which many people remember as a winner due to being a hugely successful breakout star - but she didn't actually win.

That year, which was all the way back in 2009 if you can believe it - dance group Diversity took home the crown.

And despite women with dogs winning twice in previous years; Ashleigh and Pudsey in 2012, and Jules and Matisse in 2015 - Christmas' win signals the only win by a woman, with or without a pooch, in a whopping nine years.

These statistics have rocked people's worlds.

One person reacted on X, formerly Twitter: "That’s an absolutely wild stat," as a second added: "That is insane omg".

A third chimed: "17 seasons of blokes and dogs. Such a deserving winner."

And a fourth concluded: "That’s actually mad a single act female has never won omg… and an incredibly deserving act took that title of first ever single female to win!"

In an interview with Heart, Christmas said of her win: "Ecstatic. Overwhelmed. Oh my God, I'm so happy."

Congratulations!
