Wayne Rooney has spoken out following the release of a video that's been circulating on social media.

The clip, which has so far had millions of views online, shows the Plymouth Argyle manager unlocking the door of what is believed to be his luxury Plymouth apartment, with a woman stood behind him.

Later in the clip, he is filmed walking past a TV screen. Meanwhile, the video also pans around the apartment, revealing the kitchen and dining area.

While it's not clear who the woman is, or when the footage was taken, Rooney, who could be seen wearing a grey cap and tracksuit in the clip, has now shared a statement on social media to set the record straight on what exactly was happening.

In it, he explained that while he is aware of the video, it was not taken recently, and said the people in the video had simply given him a lift home.

He also added that his son was visiting at the time.

“I am aware of a video circulating online," he wrote on Instagram.

"The video shows a man and woman looking around my apartment. The couple kindly gave me a lift home and were in there at the same time as my son who was visiting.

“Footage is from last summer. It is annoying that at least one online newspaper has chosen to edit the footage to make it appear has though a woman entered the apartment on her own.

"That is simply not true.”

Rooney has been living in the Devon city, which is hundreds of miles away from his family in Cheshire, while managing the football team.

Wife Coleen Rooney - who recently appeared on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! and finished in second place behind McFly's Danny Jones - said their time together has been limited since her husband's move down south.

"Wayne comes back once a week, sometimes twice, depending on the fixtures," she told the Mail on Sunday, prior to heading into the jungle.

"Usually, he has Sunday off so he might come home. What's good about the championship is that a lot of games are closer to me, closer to home, up in the North.

"So he'll come home on a Saturday evening and spend Sunday with us, depending on what the boys have got on.

"Time together is limited, more so than ever now because of the travelling and stuff."
