Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley has opened up about a feud he had with co-star Nina Dobrev.
The actor appeared on a new episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, and shared that it wasn't hate-at-first-sight, but they weren't best friends either.
"Just for the record: It's not that we were immediately like, 'I hate you!'" Paul recalled.
He played the role of Stefan Salvatore in the show, while Nina played Elena Gilbert, and they had one of the foundational relationships of the series.

Elena was in a love triangle with Stefan and his brother, Damon, but it seems though that there wasn't much swooning going on offset.
Paul is the first to put his hands up now, and say that in hindsight, he was probably to blame for their falling out due to his behaviour.

"I will take a lot of responsibility, because I was a bit of a grumpy, pain in the ass, I was like, 'I'm taking my acting seriously!' I was a little bit intense, and everyone else was a little bit more chill," he confessed.
“In the beginning, we didn’t get along, and that’s highly publicised. That’s something she’s spoken about, I’ve spoken about it, so it’s not like it’s breaking news, and now we’re such good friends and I absolutely adore her.”
He recalled going for a 'method actor' technique, refusing to look Nina in the eye before their first chemistry test and turning away when she tried to talk to him, in order for their first meeting to be on screen.
"I went in there and I just remember the audition and the first time we ever met in real life was actually in that audition room. It was just a very magical moment. And I felt it. She felt [it] and I know all those studio executives felt it. And I think that’s what landed me the part," he said.

He said the duo had a 'back-and-forth relationship', but insisted they always stayed professional onset despite any underlying tensions.
Nina left the cast of Vampire Diaries after season 6, and Paul revealed he 'missed' her.
"I missed having her around," he said. "We all kind of grew up and I chilled out and I was like less of a pain and I remember looking at her and I was like, 'You know what, Nina?' I was like, 'You're going to miss me one day.'"
It seems he was right, as the pair are reuniting onscreen for a new mystery drama, called You Deserve To Know, an adaptation of Aggie Blum Thompson’s novel of the same name.
It seems they've put everything behind them for now, at least.
Fans hoping to see more romance between the two are set to be disappointed though.
Paul revealed that one of the showrunners asked if they wanted their new characters to play 'romantic partners', confessing: "Nina and I talked about it."
"We feel like there’s this whole Stefan and Elena thing is so iconic and so perfect and, in a weird way, we don’t want to … have a comparison," he admitted.
“If we were playing husband and wife or boyfriend and girlfriend, people would compare that to Stefan and Elena,” he continued.
“So, we wanted to create a new dynamic so that we offered something new to the fans where we’re still interacting on screen but it’s in a different capacity.”
