Paul Mescal had a hilariously surprising response when asked about what it was like meeting King Charles.

Now, the 28-year-old Normal People star has been doing a lot of press in the run-up to Gladiator 2 - a sequel to the box-office smash-hit from 2000.

Mescal stars as Lucius Verus in the Ridley Scott film, and attended the London premiere for it in Leicester Square last week (13 November) alongside his All of Us Strangers co-star, Andrew Scott.

King Charles was also in attendance at the premiere, and chatted to Paul alongside Scott, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington.

During the event, a Variety interviewer asked Paul: "What was it like meeting the king? Had you met him before?"

The actor said he'd 'never' met the monarch before.

When asked 'how wild' it was to finally meet him, Paul explained: "I mean, it's definitely not something that I thought was in the bingo cards.

"I'm like, Irish, so it's not kind of on the list of priorities."

The Irish actor did note that it was 'an amazing thing' for the director, adding; "I know how important that is for him, so to see his film celebrated in that context was pretty special."

Opening up about the royal exchange some more, he said that he found it 'hard to hear' exactly what was being said, adding: "You're just kind of nodding along and just smiling, yeah."

Fans have since rushed in to share their reactions to Paul's response, with one X user writing: "This was so HILARIOUSLY stated lmfaoooo."

A second penned: "He is so real."

Elsewhere, the Aftersun star addressed Saoirse Ronan’s viral remark on The Graham Norton Show last month, where she pretty much silenced the studio when she made an unexpected statement about women's safety.

Paul reflected on the moment during a recent interview on The Late Late Show.

He said: "We weren't surprised because you're on a talk show, and you're kind of just talking.

"But I'm not surprised that the message received as much attention as it got because it's massively important."

Paul added: "I'm sure you've had Saoirse on the show, she is quite often, if not more often than not, the most intelligent person in the room. And I think she was spot on, hit the nail on the head."

Gladiator 2 is currently available to watch in selected cinemas.
