Kate Garraway by Derek's bedside 'as much as possible' over Christmas after he suffered heart attack

The Good Morning Britain presenter plans to spend 25 December in hospital with her husband

Good Morning Britain fans were left heartbroken last week after learning that presenter Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper was once again 'fighting for his life' after his turbulent health took a dramatic turn for the worse.

Former politician Derek, 56, has suffered several near-fatal health concerns since March 2020, when he was first diagnosed with Covid-19.

Over the last three years, he has been induced into a coma, lost his ability to speak, received around-the-clock care from medical staff and flown to Mexico to undergo experimental treatment.

Despite hope for Derek's recovery, the ex-lobbyist was last week understood to have suffered a 'massive heart attack', after which he was rushed to hospital.

A source told The Sun: "Everyone is praying for a miracle. Derek suffered a massive heart attack earlier this week which has left him fighting for his life all over again.

"It was sudden and a shock as he had been doing so well and was in great spirits, looking forward to Christmas at home with the family.

"This setback has been a huge blow for his family and all the people caring for him."

The insider went on: "Derek has fought so many times, and always, against all odds, come out the other side.

"Kate has been utterly incredible — by his side while being an amazing mum to Darcey and Billy, and trying to manage their expectations of a family Christmas."

And speaking of Christmas, it has been reported today that Derek's TV star wife Kate, also 56, plans to spend the 25 December by his bedside.

Another insider is said to have told The Sun this weekend: "It's been a heartbreaking time for Kate and, of course, poor Derek.

"Sadly, his condition remains much the same. The children are aware of the situation and have been by their dad's bedside as much as possible.

"The whole family is rallying around and trying to stay strong for one another. At Christmas time, this is especially devastating."

ITV star Kate took a huge step back from her impressive presenting career earlier this year to prioritise Derek's care.

Prior to that, however, Kate revealed during an appearance on Loose Women that Derek had returned to hospital due to experiencing a bout of ‘referrals and cancellations’.

"He's actually back in the hospital at the moment," she told viewers in November.

"I haven't talked about this, but not the horrific drama fortunately, because there have been lots of, as we all experience, referrals and cancellations."

She added that he had been remitted due to something which had begun ‘last year’ which he needed the ‘second part of’.

Tyla reached out to Kate's representatives for comment.
