A Place in the Sun presenter, Jonnie Irwin, is back in hospital just a matter of days before his 50th birthday.

The 49-year-old dad-of-three is due to celebrate the milestone birthday later this week (18 November), amidst his terminal cancer diagnosis.

Irwin took to Instagram to share with his 229k followers the latest update in his cancer journey, which first began back in 2020, after he was diagnosed with lung cancer which has since spread to his brain.

He posted a photo of his feet up on a hospital bed yesterday (13 November) and revealed to fans he had been at the hospital since last Friday (10 November).

Jonnie penned: "Back in hospital - been in since Friday with Jaundice. I had a fever and acute stabbing pain in my right hand side.

"Turns out I probably had an infection and otter issues which I won’t bore you with."

He explained he had been on drips, had regular bloods taken and had observations 'every four hours' through day and night.

"Didn’t think I’d be watching @bbcmorninglive from a hospital bed but it’s just part of the roller coaster life that this illness throws at you," he went on.

"I must admit I was especially touched by the birthday message from the the team for my birthday this coming Friday - thanks very much."

A few hours later, he uploaded a follow-up post telling fans the blood tests and scans showed his liver function to be 'heading in the right direction'.

"There’s bigger issues we will have to confront in a couple of weeks but for now I’m allowed home," he added. "I’m taking the small win for now.

"Rex tried to stay up to welcome me home but couldn’t quite stay awake bless him, although Reggie and Ronnie were wide awake so I got to them a story."

Signing off the update, Jonnie made sure to give a 'big big thanks' to all the doctors and nurses who looked after him.
