John Legend has explained why he and Chrissy Teigen are thinking of leaving California with their family.

The 46-year-old 'All of Me' singer and model Teigen, 39, who tied the knot back in 2013, share four children together; Luna, Miles, Esti and Wren.

Last month, Teigen revealed to fans the family-of-six were heading someplace safe to avoid the LA wildfires and Legend has now opened up about the 'shocking' situation.

In an article for the Wall Street Journal, Legend spoke about the California wildfires, writing: "The shock hit us on Jan. 7 when we landed in Los Angeles after a family vacation.

"On our ride home to Beverly Hills from the airport, we could see the flames and billowing smoke from the Palisades fire."

The hit-maker continued to recall: "Watching TV in the family room, our fears grew. When the Sunset fire began to expand on Jan. 9, the danger felt too close for comfort.

"That night, my wife and I gathered our four kids, four dogs and bearded dragon and drove south to a hotel in Carlsbad. We didn’t return until the following week.

"Our home was safe, but many weren’t so fortunate, and the threat still looms.

"The fires were a collective trauma that shook everyone, including our kids."

Elsewhere in the article, Legend explained that he and his wife 'have always considered' returning to New York - where they once lived.

"Today, my wife, cookbook author and model Chrissy Teigen, and I live with our kids in a house with cozy, contemporary interiors designed by Jake Arnold," the Grammy award-winner explained.

"We probably will," he shared, "once our youngest ones grow up a bit."

Legend then resolved: "Every time nature shows its wrath, we wonder if it’s time to head back East.

"Who knows."

At the time, the Legend family left their home last month, Teigen told fans she had 'no words' as the wildfires continued to spread across California.

"I haven't had the word, it is a hellscape," she wrote on her Instagram story, before assuring fans: "We are OK as of right now, and I felt weird saying that with so many people we know and don’t know who are not OK."

"Thank you for reaching out," she added. "Looking for any and all ways to help our community right now, please send anything you see. And god bless the firefighters and all first responders."
