Police have deemed the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa as 'suspicious enough' to investigate.

It was confirmed on Wednesday (26 February) that the actor, 95, and his wife, 63, were found dead at their home in Santa Fe, along with their pet dog.

Despite both being found deceased in their home, police revealed that they were found in two separate rooms.

Hackman was reportedly found dead in their mudroom - a room designed for dirty or wet footwear and clothing - while Arakawa was found dead in a bathroom.

The couple's German Shepherd dog was found dead in the bathroom closet, 10 to 15 feet from Arakawa's body.

And while the police said they don't suspect foul play, investigations are still ongoing.

Police have noted that they found an open prescription bottle, with several pills scattered on the countertop, near to the 63-year-old.

A portable heater, also found near her head, was thought to have fallen next to her in the event that she abruptly fell to the ground.

Detectives have suspected that Hackman also fell suddenly, and found a walking stick and sunglasses next to his body.

Hackman showed 'obvious signs of death'

Police have stated: "The male decedent also showed obvious signs of death, similar and consistent with the female decedent."

They believe that the couple had been dead for some time, as Arakawa's body showed signs of 'decomposition' and 'mummification' in the hands and feet.

In a news conference on Thursday afternoon (27 February), Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said: "It sounds like they had been deceased for quite a while, and I don't want to guess in reference to how long that was."

A statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said: "In the early hours of Thursday, February 27 2025, Hackman and Arakawa were transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI).

"An autopsy was performed. Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual."

However, the official results of the post-mortem examinations and toxicology reports are pending.

Police have said there is 'no immediate sign of foul play'

However, they were quick to add that they had not 'ruled that out yet'.

Mendoza added: "This is an investigation, so we're keeping everything on the table."

While police currently believe that there was no murder or third party involvement, they cannot be sure of that just yet.

The couple's death is 'suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough investigation'

It has been reported that there was no sign of forced entry into the home, and nothing appeared to be out of place inside.

"There was no indication of a struggle," Mendoza told the media. "There was no indication of anything that was missing from the home or disturbed that would be an indication that there was a crime that had occurred."

The fire department and the gas company were also called out to check for a natural gas leak, which could cause carbon monoxide poisoning, but they didn't detect anything.
