Why Dolly Parton kept relationship with late husband private after she made rare marriage comment
Dolly Parton once opened up about why she kept her relationship with her late husband, Carl Dean, private in a rare comment about her marriage.
Fans are reminiscing on the iconic singer's life and relationships after the 'Jolene' singer's death was announced by her family on Tuesday night (25 August), sending shockwaves around the world.
Her publicist, Marcel Pariseau, said: “After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Centre surrounded by loved ones.”
The 80-year-old singer, who was best known for her genre-defining hits such as '9 To 5,' and 'I Will Always Love You,' lost Carl in March 2025 aged 82, after almost 60 years of marriage.

Despite being wed for decades, the pair never decided to have children - something Dolly said gave her 'freedom' and 'independence', crediting a large part of her success down to being 'free to work'.
And, despite being in the public eye, the star managed to keep her personal life extremely private.
Speaking on The Kelleigh Bannen Show back in 2022, the country icon opened up about why setting boundaries was so crucial for her and Carl to enjoy a private life while she worked in the spotlight.
When discussing how she figured out which parts of her life to keep away from the public eye, Dolly explained it was some very wise words from her mother that helped.
"I learned early on. And I think my mama told me when I was young, 'Always keep something back for you. You can give what you’ve got to give, but don’t give it all away. Always keep something for you," she said.
The hit-maker continued: "I’ve known how to keep my husband private. It's just natural to me to protect the things and the people I love and to protect my own privacy.
"There’s a part that belongs to God and to me. It's a sacred place that just is mine and God’s, and I've known how to do that because I think God has directed that. I pray that also that God will give me enough to share and enough to spare when it comes to my money but also to myself. Let me share everything I can but let me keep me."
At the time of Carl's death, Dolly paid tribute in an emotional message that said 'words can't do justice to the love we shared'.
She added: "Thank you for all the messages, cards, and flowers that you've sent to pay your respects for the loss of my beloved husband Carl. I can't reach out personally to each of you but just know it has meant the world to me.
"He is in God's arms now and I am okay with that. I will always love you."
The statement from Dolly's publicist confirming her own death this week continued: "Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact.”
