Back in 2020, when Amy Schumer broke the news that she'd been diagnosed with Lyme disease, she issued a heartbreaking plea to her fans.

Now, with disease seemingly taking over Hollywood, we take a look back at how the comedy star was handled her condition.

As we say, Amy joins a ever-growing list of celebs that have received a Lyme disease diagnosis in recent years, with the likes of Justin Bieber, Ben Stiller, Bella Hadid and Shania Twain also battling the life-long condition.

The disease describes the results of a bacterial infection caused by being bitten by a tick.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, just less than half-a-million Americans are landed with a diagnosis per year.

And one doctor - Professor Paul Hunter who spoke to the MailOnline - says it's on the rise in the big-name community due to their tendency to jet-set overseas and spend lengthy periods of time outdoors.

"If there is a rich and famous or class bias in this, it's probably because they spend more time walking around in wooded parkland, more money to go out to those areas, or have big homes with these sorts of places," he added.

This is exactly how 43-year-old comedian Amy came into contact with a tick in the summer of 2020.

Taking to social media at the time, the I Feel Pretty actress not only revealed her diagnosis, but begged her fans for a helping hand in an emotional plea.

Sharing a photo of herself fishing as a child, she penned in a lengthy caption.

"My first ever fishing pole. Anyone get LYME this summer?"

Adding that she'd been issued some medication, she went on to explain: "I got it and I’m on doxycycline. I have maybe had it for years.

"Any advice? Can you have a glass of wine or 2 on it? I know to stay out of the sun. I’m also taking these herbs from cape cod called lyme-2."

In a celebrity rarity, she even asked her fans to reach out with any support they can offer.

"Please comment or text me on my number in my bio," she asked.

"I also want to say that I feel good and am excited to get rid of it."

And thankfully, the well wishes did come flooding into the comment section at the time.

"Hi!!! You need to get Lyme doctor, Lyme Can be very complex and surprising. Diet is needed. Hoping you are doing better," one fan wrote.

Another explained: "mine went undiagnosed for 2 years until they suspected MS last year- I’m on a whole bunch of natural stuff but YES wine is ok".

"I hope you are better and they caught it early," a third added. "I did a month of doxycycline and am now almost finished with rocephin through my midline.

"I found doing an anti-inflammatory diet helps."
