Netflix has announced a new true-crime documentary that looks into the shocking murder of a teenage girl in 1999.

Watch the trailer below:

Rocío Wanninkhof was only 19 years old when she was killed in her hometown of Mijas in the Costa del Sol, Spain.

Dolores Vázquez, her mother's 52-year-old ex-partner, was convicted by a jury trial for the murder and was sent to prison without solid evidence to prove her guilt.

The documentary will investigate the murder and the miscarriage of justice that followed which was the result of homophobic attitudes relating to the lesbian relationship between Dolores and Rocío's mother, Alicia Hornos.

Dolores and Alicia were in a relationship between 1982 and 1988 and raised Rocío, who was biologically Alicia's, with her her sister and brother. Rocío and her sister would tell their school they had two mothers.

The pair continued to live with each other even after their split but their friendship eventually came to a sour end around 1994. Dolores was portrayed as a scorned lover and a "predatory lesbian", as told in the documentary regarding her conviction.

On the afternoon of 9th October 1999, Rocío walked from her family home to visit her boyfriend who lived half a kilometre away in La Cala de Mijas.

She was meant to return home to shower before meeting her boyfriend and some friends at a fair later that night. However, she vanished.

A resident who passed away before the trial began was the last person to see Rocío alive walking from the area where her boyfriend lived.

Alicia Hornos, Rocío's mum, went out looking for her the next day and found a pair of her running shoes and a blood trail. They alerted police who theorised she had been murdered.

Rocío's body was found on 2nd November in an advanced state of decomposition. The autopsy confirmed her identity and that she had been stabbed nine times.

DNA evidence connected the murders of Rocío Wanninkhof and Sonia Carabantes (

After being convicted, Dolores appealed the sentence. While she was serving time, another murder of a teenage girl, that of Sonia Carabantes, occurred in August 2003, occurred.

DNA found from the crime scene of the 17-year-old's murder matched DNA found from the scene of the murder of Rocío.

The DNA belonged to Tony Alexander King, a 32-year-old British sex offender. He was arrested in 2003 and convicted of both murders and sentenced to 55 years in prison.

Murder by the Beach can be streamed on Netflix right now.
