With Legally Blonde 3 well underway, screenwriter Mindy Kaling has revealed some new details about her involvement in the hit franchise and working with Reese Witherspoon. Eeek!

Actress and producer Kaling - who is penning the script for the third instalment - spoke to Good Morning American about the legacy of Legally Blonde.

"I was nervous, because the [original 2001] movie is so iconic," she said, adding: "But then I thought, 'It'd be really fun to see that character in her 40s. What is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman?'"

Kaling added: "And it's been really funny to write. And I'm working on it with my friend Dan [Goor], and I think it's going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part."

Excitingly, Reese Witherspoon will be reprising her role as the pink-loving, sorority girl-turner-badass lawyer Elle Woods in the upcoming movie.

Kaling has worked with Witherspoon in the past - including in A Wrinkle in Time (2018) and The Morning Show (2019).

"I'd been working with her on a couple movies and we've been friends for a while. And I have always quoted the movies to her," said Kaling.

The original movie followed lead character Elle Woods as she overcame the doubt and sexism of her peers to strut her way to the top of Harvard Law School, ditching her disrespectful boyfriend along the way.

Legally Blonde gave us everything we wanted from a teen comedy. Yes, there were handbag-sized dogs in colour co-ords, but there were also powerful themes of female empowerment, identity and friendship.

While there's no official word on the plot for Legally Blonde 3, back in 2015, Reese revealed that following the presidential campaign trail of Hilary Clinton had left her wondering what turn Elle's career might have taken.

"I think it'd be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court Justice, or someone who runs for office...

President, I mean," she said, while chatting on the Fashionably Late with Rachel Zoe.

In other words: watch this space, because Elle is likely to be a major figure in the US legal system.

Reese Witherspoon first confirmed a part three was in the works in June 2018 with an Instagram post.

Last year, Universal Pictures exclusively confirmed to Tyla that Legally Blonde 3 would be hitting cinemas on May 8 2020 - a date which has since been pushed back due to the pandemic.

While there currently isn't a new date for the film's release, we have high hopes it won't be long.
