The Oscars 2022 took a rather gobsmacking turn on Sunday night, when Will Smith 'slapped' comedian Chris Rock over a joke he made at wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith's expense.

While many were left stunned by the shocking incident, others were heartbroken for Jada, after her reaction to the joke came to light.

You can watch the clip below:

Immediately after Chris makes the 'GI Jane' joke, Jada seems to instantly respond, rolling her eyes and looking seriously unimpressed by the remark.

G.I. Jane is an action movie from 1997, where lead actress Demi Moore shaves her head. It seems Chris' joke was in reference to Jada's shaven style, after the 50-year-old recently opened up about her experience with alopecia.

And after spotting her reaction, fans were gutted for Jada. One person commented: "Tbh I'm mostly sad for Jada in all of this. She was publicly ridiculed for her physical condition in front of millions and regardless of the reaction, all of the attention is on her now and that makes me sad."

While another said: "The look on Jada's face after what Chris said was even more heartbroken."

And a third added: "Jada was so so heartbroken and sad when the camera panned over to her after that joke."

Following the incident, Will delivered an emotional acceptance speech after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Referencing his earlier actions on stage, he tearfully said: "I want to apologise to the academy. I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees."

He added: "Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things".

Smith wrapped-up his speech with: "Thank you. I hope the academy invites me back."

Following the incident, LAPD has said 'no police report has been filed'.

Speaking to ABC News, they said: "LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program.

"The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report."

They added: "If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report."
