Madonna's relatives were 'preparing for the worst' after the star was rushed to hospital.

A statement released yesterday (28 June) from the 'Vogue' hit-maker's talent manager, Guy Oseary, to Instagram told fans she 'developed a serious bacterial infection' and would therefore need to postpone her upcoming tour set to commence next month (15 July).

Madonna's family have since broken their silence on the matter and revealed just how major her condition is, dubbing the health scare a 'wake up call'.

"On Saturday June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which lead to a several day stay in the ICU," Oseary told concerned fans.

The talent manager continued: "Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.

"At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour. We will share more details with you soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows."

The 64-year-old 'Papa Don't Preach' star was scheduled to kick off her 40th anniversary 'Celebration' tour in Vancouver next month.

The global tour, all about 'highlighting her unmatched catalog of music from the past 40-plus years', was originally set to hit US stops including Detroit, Chicago, New York, Miami and Los Angeles as well as 11 buzzing European cities; London, Barcelona, Paris, and Stockholm.

One of Madonna's relatives has since opened up about the ordeal, telling the Daily Mail: "For the past couple of days, no one really knew which direction this was going to turn, and her family was preparing for the worst.

"That is why it was kept a secret since Saturday. Everyone believed that we may lose her and that has been the reality of the situation."

They also went on to add that the health scare had been a major 'wake up call' for Madge.

"This really woke her the f**k up," the source continued. "She has not been living as healthy a life as she should be for her age, and she has been wearing herself thin over the past couple of months.

"She thinks that she is still young when, in fact, she is not. She also believes that she is invincible."

The relative added: "Everything, including this tour, is taking a backseat right now and no one is allowed to even mention anything work related around her because she will lose her s***.

"She will put her career and her fame before her health until the day she is dead."
