Emily Ratajkowski defends the 'most controversial' dress she's ever worn

Emily Ratajkowski defends the 'most controversial' dress she's ever worn

Model Emily Ratajkowski has spoken out about about why she decided to still wear the 'most controversial dress' she's ever worn.

Model Emily Ratajkowski has spoken out about about why she decided to still wear the 'most controversial dress' she's ever worn.

The 31-year-old model, who has also since become an author, is known for her daring outfits.

However, not everything she's worn has always gone down well.

On an episode of the 'Fashion Flashback' YouTube series by Harper's Bazaar, Ratajkowski opened up about one particularly controversial fashion moment.

The dress was even branded as 'extremely vulgar' by one critic in particular.

The mum has since reflected on whether or not she would go back in time and decide to not wear the dress.

The dress in question is the one Ratajkowski wore for Harper's Bazaar's 2016 Icon Party.

"It was a Julien Macdonald dress. I can remember somebody called it extremely vulgar and it became like this huge controversy on the internet and some of my agents were mad at me," the model explains.

But why did the outfit cause such controversy?

Ratajkowski explains some of her agents 'thought it was too sexy'.

"I know this sounds whatever, but I was in my twenties, and I just like, hadn't registered that it was so sexy because there is a panel in the middle, but it looks like there isn't," she continues.

Ratajkowski recalled how she hit back at TV fashion consultant Tim Gunn - who called the dress 'appallingly vulgar and revealing' - and slammed his comments as 'sexist', which led to a whole 'drama' ensuing.

At the time, Ratajkowski took to Twitter responding to the backlash she faced over the dress.

She wrote: "I wasn't even thinking of the hosts of nationally televised shows who call women vulgar because they can see their stomachs."

Her tweets continued: "Western men in 2016: Want to ban women abroad from voluntarily covering themselves at the beach.

"Then want women to cover up their 'vulgar' bodies at home.

"Who controls women's bodies in 2016? [...] It's 2016. Why keep trying to dictate what women can wear?"

Macdonald also spoke out at the time in support of Ratajkowski and in defence of the dress.

He told Associated Press: "When you wear a glamorous dress you don’t do it because you want to sit in the corner."

The designer also argued 'fashion if for setting new boundaries' and only becomes 'interesting' when 'people question you'.

Despite the fall-out from her wearing the Macdonald dress, Ratajkowski stills thinks she looked 'great'.

She says: "I was basically like, called out for wanting attention, which I think is interesting, because you go to red carpets for attention, basically. Essentially it's part of your job as a celebrity."
