You: People Are Only Just Realising Where These Character Names Come From

It's all starting to make sense!

Fans of Netflix’s chilling drama You will know that the series is filled with the most shocking revelations.

In October, Netflix dropped the highly anticipated third season, which follows serial killer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) as he moves into a family home in a California suburb called Madre Linda with his equally murderous and pregnant partner, Love (Victoria Pedretti).

Joe tries his best to change his murderous ways and be a doting dad but he soon returns to his usual antics - namely, killing those who threaten him.

The Goldbergs name their newborn son Henry Forty Quinn-Goldberg. His middle name Forty is meant to be a touching tribute to Love’s deceased twin brother, Forty.

Fans of the show have just realised the hidden meaning behind Love and Forty’s names.

A tennis coach and Reddit user posted a thread which links their names. “As a tennis coach I'm embarrassed that it took me as long as it did to put two and two together to realise that Forty and Love are tennis terms,” they explained. “I was only viewing those names as hippie/commune names.”

In case you’re not a massive tennis fan, the scoring in the sport is quite unusual. Both forty and love are tennis terms and in the game, each player starts at zero which is referred to as “love”. When the score is zero-zero, it’s actually love-love. Each game only goes up to forty, suggesting the twins represents the highest and the lowest scores possible for a tennis game.

In the show, it is not clear why the Quinn family decided to give their children tennis-themed names.

One Reddit user suggested their names might represent how their parents felt about them: “I think their names are a reflection of how their parents feel about them/treat them. Forty being all the points, the best. Love being no points, nothing.”

While a second commenter who also plays tennis said they didn’t notice the reference initially. “I wonder how many people actually picked up on that, and I'm surprised they never mentioned it in the show because I thought it was obvious.”

We'll never be able to watch Wimbledon the same after this.
