The Handmaid's Tale star Yvonne Strahovski has opened up about what could be in store for her character, Serena Joy, in Season 5 of the dystopian drama based on Margaret Atwood's book.
Fans of the show will know that Season 4 ended with Serena's husband, Fred Waterford, murdered by June Osborne and other former handmaids who had escaped the clutches of Gilead.
But with Fred gone, what's next for Serena? Speaking to Deadline, Yvonne said: “I don’t really know which way they're gonna go with Serena, but I keep imagining her moving forward. Frustratingly, for the audience in a capacity where she gets out and things work out and she gains some kind of political traction.”

After Fred and Serena were captured in Canada and held in custody awaiting trial, Serena discovered she was pregnant and the pair ended up teaming up against June. Fred agreed to spill secrets about Gilead - and its members - in order to escape justice, and very nearly made it to Geneva for his immunity hearing before he was killed.
On one occasion before his death, Fred and Serena were appearing in court when they were met with a fan group - much to everyone's surprise.
With Fred's sudden death, Yvonne hinted Serena's support in Canada could be revisited in future episodes.

She added: “Or something based off the fan group we saw her have with the Commander when people stepped out and were cheering for them. I just, I think that would be a very frustrating portrayal, which would be interesting to watch.”
Many fans are of the opinion that Serena will start a new life for herself - and her baby - in Canada.
Before Gilead was formed, flashbacks to Fred and Serena's life prior showed Serena to be an author, having just had a controversial novel published.

Despite fan theories, we'll have to wait to see what's next for Serena. Although Season 5 has been confirmed, a release date has not yet been announced.
