In fact, series star Lili Reinhart also took to Twitter to explain the 'confusing' premise as the show returned to screens.

The first five episodes of season 6 are a special event and the show has been temporarily retitled RiverVALE for the occasion.

"Season 6 starts off with a special 5 episode event, which takes place in a different ‘universe’— RiverVale— while the rest of the season will air in January," Lili explained.

"I know it’s confusing. But these 5 episodes are a trip- you’ll see our characters like never before."

One confused fan replied: "okay now i understand".

Similarly, another viewer quoted Lili's tweet, writing: "okay im not confused anymore."

A third shared: "okay so this makes me feel a tad bit better."

And a fourth wrote: "I am so confused..."

Some fans cheekily compared Riverdale to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"I'm 100% convinced now that everyone is doing the multiverse thing and I'm kind of here for it," one fan tweeted.

Another person said: "are y’all in the mcu?"

However some fans were beyond excited for the five-episode excursion. "Just saw the first episode and I'm 100% here for it," one fan said.

"Bring on the magic and rituals".

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke with TV Line about the change, revealing it was the show’s American network The CW that asked for a special event to kick off the season.

"We [the writers] were asking ourselves, ‘What haven’t we done, and what do people always ask us about?’ And we hadn’t yet ever gone into supernatural horror or overt horror, and it’s something that we’re asked about all the time from our fans, and even from the cast. So it felt like, ‘Oh great, this is definitely the time to do it.'"

The sixth instalment of the teen drama arrives just a few weeks after the delayed fifth season.

Fans will remember season 5 ended with Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) breaking up again. Archie and Betty (Lili Reinhart) decide to explore a romantic relationship but just as things become steamy, they find a bomb left under the bed as a goodbye present from Hiram (Mark Consuelos) under the bed that is about to explode.

Yikes!

As sparks fly between Archie and Betty, Veronica rebounded with her ex-boyfriend Reggie (Charles Melton) and they mark their reunion by opening a casino in the back of their investment business.

And Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) finally moved in with her new boyfriend Jughead (Cole Sprouse).
