From Shonda Rhimes of Shondaland (the mastermind behind Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and Bridgerton), Netflix has dropped the trailer for Inventing Anna.

Inventing Anna is based on the true crime tale of Anna Sorokin who scammed hundreds of thousands of dollars from New York businesses by pretending to be a wealthy German heiress.

Posting the trailer on Twitter, Netflix also added: "Inspired by the true story of a total fake. From Shonda Rhimes and Shondaland, comes Inventing Anna starring Anna Chlumsky, Laverne Cox, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd, and Julia Garner as Anna Delvey. Premieres February 11".

Inspired by the New York Magazine article 'How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People' by Jessica Pressler, Inventing Anna tells the true story of Russia-born Anna Sorokin who moved to New York in 2013 and created the fake identity of Anna Delvey, a German heiress worth millions.

In total, Sorokin, AKA the Soho Grifter, is said to have scammed friends and New York businesses out of $275,000 (£220,000).

In 2019, she was convicted of multiple counts of attempted grand larceny, theft of services, and larceny in the second degree and was sentenced to between four and 12 years for her crimes.

She is currently serving time at Albion Correctional Facility in Albion, New York and told the New York Times from prison: "I'd be lying to you and to everyone else and to myself if I said I was sorry for anything".

Another person shared the same sentiment: "I am SO VERY excited about this."

Others were super excited about Julia Garner who won an Emmy for her role in Ozark and will be playing Anna: "Watching this, simply to see Julia Garner. What a gem".

The synopsis for Inventing Anna says: "A journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York's social scene - and stole their money as well.

"But is Anna New York's biggest con woman or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream?"

Inventing Anna will be available on Netflix on 11th February 2022.
