Posting the trailer on Twitter, Netflix also added: "Inspired by the true story of a total fake. From Shonda Rhimes and Shondaland, comes Inventing Anna starring Anna Chlumsky, Laverne Cox, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd, and Julia Garner as Anna Delvey. Premieres February 11".

Inspired by the New York Magazine article 'How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People' by Jessica Pressler, Inventing Anna tells the true story of Russia-born Anna Sorokin who moved to New York in 2013 and created the fake identity of Anna Delvey, a German heiress worth millions.

In 2019, she was convicted of multiple counts of attempted grand larceny, theft of services, and larceny in the second degree and was sentenced to between four and 12 years for her crimes.

She is currently serving time at Albion Correctional Facility in Albion, New York and told the New York Times from prison: "I'd be lying to you and to everyone else and to myself if I said I was sorry for anything".
