Gogglebox star Andy Michael has died at the age of 61 following a short illness, Channel 4 has confirmed.

The family first appeared on Gogglebox in the debut episode in 2013, and were firm favourites amongst viewers.

The statement, given to the PA news agency, said: “We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Gogglebox star Andy Michael at the age of 61 following a short illness.

“Andy passed away last weekend with his family by his side.

“Retired hotelier Andy, who brought much wit and insight to Gogglebox, was one of the show’s original cast members, appearing in the very first episode in 2013.

“Beloved father to Katy, Alex, Pascal and Louis, and cherished husband of Carolyne, Andy was a much-loved and respected member of the Gogglebox family, and he will be very sadly missed.

“Our love and thoughts are with Carolyne and the entire family. The family have asked for privacy at this very sad time."

Channel 4 later added on Twitter: "We are so saddened to hear of the loss of Gogglebox star Andy Michael. Our love and thoughts are with Andy’s family and friends."

Earlier this week it was announced that Gogglebox star Mary Cook had died at the age of 92.

Firm favourite Mary, who featured on the show with good pal Marina, had not featured on the show for a while, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Unfortunately, it was not possible to film with the full cast," she wrote in a piece published in The Telegraph last year. "For example, we took the decision to tell Mary and Marina, who are in their 90s and live in a care home, that we didn't want them put at any risk so we should stop filming with them altogether.

"The ladies are safe and well looked after but often tell us they dearly miss the crews and the fun they have during filming each week."
