Gavin And Stacey Stars Ruth Jones And Rob Brydon Teaming Up For New BBC Drama

Gavin And Stacey Stars Ruth Jones And Rob Brydon Teaming Up For New BBC Drama

We can’t wait to tune into this.

We’ve been teased mercilessly about whether there will ever be a Gavin and Stacey follow-up after that incredible Christmas special.

And while we’re still in the dark about the future of the nation’s best-loved sitcom, two stars from the series are reuniting for another show that looks set to tickle our funnybone.

Gavin and Stacey writer Ruth Jones (who also plays all-round legend Nessa) has tagged up with Uncle Bryn (aka Rob Brydon) for one-off BBC comedy, Gaynor and Ray.

The pair will play the titular characters, who are two fifty-something newlyweds. Sticking to their real-life Welsh roots, Gaynor and Ray are based in Cardiff, with their marriage to each other their second nuptials.

Gaynor’s first marriage ended when she discovered her ex-husband had repeatedly cheated on her (Yikes?). Meanwhile, Ray’s first marriage ended because he was ‘impossible to live with’ (or so his ex-wife never tires of telling him).

But now they’re both trying again with each other - and we already have our fingers crossed that things will go slightly better for the pair.

In this 35 minute one-off special, we join Ray and Gaynor on their honeymoon to the Scottish Highlands where they meet a variety of characters and end up in a sequence of comedic situations. With the pair having only met six months ago, there are many things – not all of them endearing – that this couple keeps discovering about each other - leaving them both questioning if they've rushed into this marriage.

It's all a bit Married At First Sight UK for us, so far!

Speaking about their new venture, writer-creators David Peet and Ruth Jones explain: “We’re delighted to watch Gaynor and Ray come to life on screen. Through them we get to see the male and female take on life and relationships as well as the nonsense in the day-to-day.”

Gregor Sharp, Commissioning Editor for the BBC, added: “Ruth and David’s portrait of the ups and downs of a new relationship is full of warmth, wit and wisdom and is brilliantly performed by the laugh out loud combination of Ruth and Rob, a match made in comedy heaven. We can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

Rob has previously teased he's keen for a Gavin and Stacey reunion.

Speaking on ITV's Lorraine, he explained: "I don't know what's going to happen. Whatever I say about this, I get into trouble!

"If I say I don't want to do anymore, I look like a killjoy. If I say 'I think they should do some more' it's as if I'm teasing there being another. I honestly don't know, I'd love it if they did."

A release date for Gaynor and Ray is yet to be announced. Keep checking back in with Tyla for further updates.
