Cinderella Reboot Launches On Amazon Prime

Cinderella Reboot Launches On Amazon Prime

The new Cinderella, starring Fifth Harmony's Camila Cabello, will be available to stream on Amazon Prime from September 3.

The reboot of Cinderella will launch on Amazon Prime this Friday (September 3), featuring Fifth Harmony singer Camilla Cabello, Frozen star Idina Menzel, and actor Billy Porter.

The film will be available to stream all over the world on Prime Video, and is a movie musical with contemporary pop songs as well as original songs written by Cabello and Menzel.

According to Amazon, “Cinderella is a musically-driven bold new take on the traditional story you grew up with.”

Cabello plays Cinderella, known by the townspeople as Ella, an ambitious young woman who loves designing and making clothes and won’t put down her dreams just because a cute, young prince (Nicholas Galitzine) comes along.

The heroine of this film is pegged as a #GirlBoss, a term coined in the late noughties and early 2010s for strong female entrepreneurs.

Early reviews of the film tend to vary, with many sitting at two or three stars out of five. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw wrote that the “new Cinderella isn’t bad, and Camila Cabello makes a rather personable lead,” giving the film three out of five stars.

IndieWire was much more positive, stating that it is “remarkable just how effervescent and charming Kay Cannon’s Cinderella actually is,” giving it a B minus in their school-grade rating system.

The Independent’s review was much more harsh, arguing that “there’s nothing else here that’s remotely original” and calling it a fantasy for “voracious capitalists” as Ella strives for material success from her dressmaking. They gave it two stars.

Despite the varied response from critics, the star-studded cast and crew – including James Corden, Romesh Ranganathan, James Acaster and Minnie Driver – on top of a number of ‘bops’ included on the soundtrack means that this movie musical will likely be popular for Amazon’s viewers.

Though simply a reboot of past Cinderella stories, it will definitely be a great girls-night film for fairytale, romantic comedy, and musical lovers alike.

Cinderella is available to stream on Amazon Prime from September 3.
