A Very British Scandal: Viewers Are All Saying The Same Thing About The BBC Drama

This is a little bit awkward...

If you're among the few who haven't yet tuned in to A Very British Scandal on BBC One, then you should know what viewers are saying about it before you start watching.

Since the first episode aired on Boxing Day, the series, starring Claire Foy and Paul Bettany, has received rave reviews - but there's one thing that fans wish they had known in advance.

It turns out that the series about "sex, secrets and suspicion" is not one to watch with your relatives - who would have guessed?

The gripping drama tells the true story of the scandalous divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll.

Taking the media by storm back in the 1960s, the couple's messy divorce saw Margaret Campbell (Claire Foy) become vilified by the press after a pornographic photo of her was made public and used as evidence of her infidelity to the Duke.

Campbell was later nicknamed as the "dirty duchess."

If you're sitting around with your family in that blissfully lazy period between Christmas and New Years and you're looking for something to watch together, maybe best to give this series a miss.

But you can safely watch the trailer here:

One viewer, who got caught off-guard by the raunchy scenes, tweeted: "Thoughts and prayers with everyone else sitting down to watch A Very British Scandal with their parents rn xx Only recently able to look mine in eyes again after Bridgerton last year."

Another joked: "Sending thoughts and prayers to everyone else who is now locked into watching A Very British Scandal with their families, not [realising] how much sex there would be in it."

A third unfortunate viewer wrote: "Watching A Very British Scandal with my 90 year old grandmother and can confirm subtitles make sex scenes more awkward #hegroans #shegroans #theymoan."

Many were caught off guard when the first episode of the three-part drama when three different sex scenes were shown in the first half-hour.

One viewer wrote: "Watching A Very British Scandal in front of my parents was not the best idea. Even at 37 seeing sex scenes on TV with them in the room is all kinds of awkward. Thanks @PhelpsieSarah!"

Another added: "I forgot how awkward it was watching sex scenes with a parent [til] A Very British Scandal tonight."

Claire Foy, herself, has already commented publicly on filming said sex scenes, confessing that she found it "really hard."

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, she admitted that she couldn't help but feel "exploited" while performing in the steamier scenes.

She said: "It’s grim – it’s the grimmest thing you can do. You feel exposed. Everyone can make you try to not feel that way but it’s unfortunately the reality."

But despite her discomfort, Claire went on to say that she strongly felt she "had to be in in it", but made it as female as possible.

She added: "I did not want it be that sort of awful climactic sexual experience you often see on the cinema screen."

Claire Foy has revealed she was uncomfortable shooting sex scenes for the show. (
