Heartbreaking footage of a loyal dog waiting on a busy road in Mongolia where its owner died is doing the rounds on social media.

According to reports, the dog has been seen in the road for 80 days, ever since its owner died there on 21st August.

The video, which was taken in the middle of the road in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, has been viewed millions of times on the Pear Video page and other social media sites.

The footage was filmed on 10th November and locals say that they have tried to help it. A taxi driver claimed the dog keeps running away when it is approached.

"Drivers often give the little dog bits of food, but when we get out, he goes away," he said.

"This owner's relationship with her dog was very deep. After she was killed, this little dog has just stayed standing guard."

The taxi driver continued: "Every day it's in the road, I always see it.

"The relationship between man and dog is so true."

The moving footage sees the dog pacing in the middle of the road as cars rush past. It is also seen sitting patiently on the pavement, waiting for his owner to comeback.

It is unclear how the dog's owner died, and social media users have understandably expressed concern for the pooch's welfare. Others have commented on its relentless loyalty to its owner.

"So very sad. This dog has more compassion than most of society, who could learn a lesson just watching. I wish I could give that dog a hug and the care it deserves," posted one person.

Somebody else suggested: "Unrelenting loyalty, very heary warming. I hope it has a happy ending for the dog. We need to arrange a crowdfunding page to buy it a shelter and food while it waits [sic]."

"Someone please help him, I'm sure it's not safe for him or other people. He needs help to move on. Poor little thing," added a third social media user.

Volunteers have reportedly been trying to reach out to the friends and family of the owner to help find the animal a new home.
