These days, the art of gift-giving is all about the surprise factor.

Whether it's an engagement ring in a glass of champagne or plane tickets disguised in an old shoe box, catching your recipient off guard is half the fun.

That's why ASDA has created its new Surprise Cake, which is essentially an edible gift box.

Promising to provide a "fun-filled surprise", the supermarket's new offering looks like a standard (albeit delicious) cake from the outside. However, it holds a secret.

Unbeknownst to the person being surprised, it's actually hollow and contains a space for a small present. How cool?!

ASDA says: "Whether you're celebrating a new job, an anniversary or a gender reveal, Asda's new Surprise Cake is the ultimate quirky showstopper, guaranteed to provide WOW factor for any special occasion.

"Inspired by the growing trend of surprise and reveal parties, the Surprise Cake is the first of its kind on the market and gives customers even more of a reason to celebrate."

Explaining how to use the cake-come-edible gift box, ASDA says: "Simply insert the present of your choice into the gift-sized hole in the centre of the cake, disguise with edible confetti and pull out to astound your loved one!"

The supermarket have even posted a video to show how it's done. Take a look...

Of course the space is quite small, so the cake works best for dinky presents like jewellery.

And surprise gift aside, the actual cake doesn't disappoint either. The colourful cake is made from delicious moist chocolate sponge, and topped with swirls of multi-coloured icing and playful edible confetti.

Costing just £13 and feeding up to 20, this is set to a budget-friendly way to get people at your party talking.

Becky Price, Celebration Cake Product Developer, said: "We know our customers love a novelty celebration cake to tuck into on a special occasion, so we wanted to provide them with something unique and innovative.

"Whether it's a gender reveal, birthday, who knows maybe even a proposal, this cake is guaranteed to surprise and delight!"

We LOVE this idea.

Asda's Surprise Cake is available in stores and online from 13th of July.
