Americans Are Making Mashed Potato Out Of Crisps And It's Shocking Us All

For heaven’s sake, just by some Smash!

Let's be honest - we all have a few strange food habits.

While some of us like to pretend they favour haute cuisine, sometimes all you fancy is a Pot Noodle and a cheese sandwich.

However, one American has taken no-frills cooking to the extreme, after she demonstrated how she made mashed potato out of a packet of crisps.

Prepared to be afraid.

In a video that's been liked over 1.5 million times on TikTok, user Starley showed how she brought a saucepan of salted water to the boil and added a full packet of Lay's potato chips, before leaving them to boil for five minutes - until they turn mushy.

After straining the water from the soggy crisps, Starley then tells viewers to return the pan to a low heat, and add a little bit of butter as well as a small measure of full-fat milk.

Yes, she really is stirring crisps (

Once finished stirring, she adds a healthy helping of pre-grated cheese, as well as onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper for seasoning, before giving one final thorough stir and serving.

It doesn't look to be the most appetising way of making mashed potato, but a small part of us also wants to give it a try?

The recipe is...interesting (

Naturally, people have been left stunned by Starley's recipe, and were quick to register their shock in the comments.

"I've never seen someone unmake chips," one person wrote.

"Tell me you're American without telling me you're American," a second said.

"What's something that looks illegal, but isn't illegal?" a third replied to the video.

Others were quick to point out that adding more salt to the already salty crisps would mean that this is probably an incredibly unhealthy portion of mash.

"It's adding the salt to salty chips for me," said one.

A second chipped in: "That's just mashed potato but 19482x more unhealthy."

"The sodium!" a third wrote.

However, some people have been tempted by the unique recipe, and are now looking to get their hands on a packet of crisps to give it a try.

"I'm trying this tomorrow!" admitted one viewer, while another said: "You know what, this is as dope as hell."

Starley is not the only person Stateside to have made crisp-packet mash.

TikTok 'chef' Elis_Kitchen had a similar technique in making his unique snack, except he swaps out the seasoning for just a healthy dollop of paprika - resulting in his mash being quite the unusual colour.

Hmm...we'll stick to just using regular potatoes to make our mash for now.
