Each box is put together in store by staff each day, and contains fruit and veg that has come slightly damaged, discoloured of deteriorated in quality.

The Too Good To Waste boxes will be available to buy in all 760 stores in Scotland, England and Wales, from opening until midday, at which point any leftover boxes will be donated to local good causes like foodbanks and soup kitchens, as part of Lidl's Feed It Back programme.

Back in August, Lidl rolled out the boxes to 122 of its stores as part of a trial scheme. In that time, more than 50,000 boxes were sold, preventing a whopping 250 tonnes of food going to waste.

Lidl's GB CEO, Christian Härtnagel, said of the scheme: "The positive feedback that we have received off the back of our trial has been incredible; from our colleagues who are showing so much passion for them, to our customers who were getting in touch from the get go asking where they could get one."

'He continued: "The really brilliant thing about this initiative is that, not only is it helping to tackle the highly important challenge of food waste, it's also helping our customers make even more savings.

"Additionally, it's a great example of how we, as a discounter, can utilise our lean and efficient business model to fulfil our mission to make good, healthy food more affordable and accessible, whilst acting sustainably."

Other supermarkets like Asda and Morrisons are currently selling 'wonky veg' boxes for between £3 and £3.50, making Lidl's Too Good To Waste the cheapest on the market.
