Christmas dinner isn't just about roast turkey with all the trimmings, there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan-friendly recipes to make a festive feast.

One in eight Brits are now vegetarian or vegan, according to a survey by Waitrose found published recently.

According to data from comparethemarket.com, there has been a significant spike in the number of people in the UK going vegan since 2016, with more than 3.5 million British people now identifying as such.

If you're just starting out as veggie or vegan, it can be tricky to think of inventive alternatives for Christmas dinner. To help you out, we've found some great recipes on Pinterest for you to try.

Vegan pigs in blankets

Pigs in blankets are a must at Christmas, but they aren't exactly veggie-friendly as they contain pork sausages and bacon. This version, from Natalie Tamara, combines chickpea sausages with sundried tomato blankets for a tasty alternative.

Honey-roasted veg

It's easy to discard vegetables as an afterthought, but that doesn't have to be the case. This recipe by Charlotte's Lively Kitchen for honey-roasted carrots and parsnips with rosemary and thyme is easy and delicious.

Woodland pie

A showstopper doesn't have to be meat - try this woodland pie with onions, mushrooms, leeks, cranberries, butter beans, chestnuts, hazelnuts and more from the Vegetarian Society. You can feed six to eight people with one pie.

Mushroom, lentil and nut wellington

For a slightly different take, try this mushroom, lentil and nut wellington from Jac Meldrum, covered in delicious golden pastry. Feeds six to eight people.

Apricot and nut stuffing

Feed a veggie crowd with these apricot and nut stuffing balls, which require ready-to-eat dried apricots, hazelnuts, lemon, onions and breadcrumbs. You can always substitute the butter for vegan-friendly butter, and try flax egg (ground flaxseed meal with water).

Sweet potato pastilla

You can give this Sainsbury's sweet potato pastilla a go if you want to try something adventurous. Make sure the feta is vegetarian, or skip the cheese and dairy altogether if you want a vegan version.

Beet wellington

A vegan take on the beef equivalent, this beet wellington from Lazy Cat Kitchen makes a great centrepiece. The balsamic reduction adds the wow factor - this is guaranteed to impress your guests.

Stuffed roasted butternut squash

This looks seriously impressive - a roasted butternut squash stuffed wild rice, cranberries, walnuts, and sage filling from It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken. It serves eight and you can make it ahead of time, to save yourself from stress on the day.
