Greggs’ Vegan Steak Bake Lands In Stores Today

This is not a drill.

For months we've been waiting patiently for news on Greggs' new vegan options following the smash-hit success of its Vegan Sausage Rolls.

And finally, the day is upon us. Introducing the bakery's second savoury offering: the Vegan Steak Bake.

Yep, this is really happening.

The new Greggs product is pretty much exactly like the much-loved meaty version, with 96 layers of its delicious puff pastry housing diced onions and a rich, gravy filling.

Instead of the steak, inside you'll find cubes of Quorn mycoptrotein pieces - the same ingredient used in the baker's famous meat-free sausage rolls.

Greggs announced the launch on its social media this morning, sharing a video alongside the caption: "The time has come".

Sharing pictures of the crispy pastry and the oozing filling, the video brands the new addition "the season's must have bake". A bold claim, but we'd be willing to put it to the test.

"F*CK YES GREGGS," one Greggs fan commented under the promotional video.

While another added: 'About time".

A third chipped in: "Gregg's, you have my heart, always and forever". Ours too.

News of the bake's imminent release leaked on social media last week after one store put up the product's price tag early.

But 1,000 lucky Greggs fans were finally given the opportunity to try the bake last night before the general public, at the bake's exclusive launch in the Grainger Street store in Newcastle Upon-Tyne - and it proved so popular that people were queueing outside the doors to get their hands on one.

The video added that the bake is dropping in selected stores to start off with.

But if your local isn't one of the 1,300 stores getting a first taste of the the 380 calorie vegan delight, then don't fear - it is launching in a further 700 shops from the 16th January.

If you want to try one today, the bake is being advertised as £1.55 to takeaway or £1.85 in store.

The high street bakery has been teasing its new vegan launch for a while now, with its chief executive Roger Whiteside revealing they were working on a whole load more plant based recipes back in August, and the store's official Twitter account even asking customers which vegan products they'd like to see last month.

We know the Steak Bake isn't all Greggs has in store for us, so we'll be keeping an eye out for any more exciting Veganuary updates and we'll update you when we know more.
