Greggs has officially pledged to give away 50,000 free breakfasts starting from today.

Nope, this is not a drill.

Teaming up with Heinz, the high street bakery is giving thousands of visitors a Christmas treat - and all they need to do is download the Greggs Rewards app.

From today until New Year's Eve, those who can show they have newly downloaded the app will receive a free hot drink alongside a breakfast roll with some Heinz Tomato Ketchup or a sachet of HP Brown Sauce.

The 50,000 recipients can either have bacon, sausage or omelette in their roll, and they'll be able to redeem their brekky via a QR code on the app.

It's not just a free breakfast the app might be offering, shoppers can also collect digital stamps when they're purchasing their favourite food and drinks.

These stamps can then eventually be exchanged for freebies. Simply scan your app every time you go buy your baked goods, and for every nine products you buy in any one product category, you will be given a 10th for free.

Ten sausage rolls, anyone?

You can download the app on an Apple or Android device here.

In other Greggs related news, the chain recently revealed it would soon be making sandwiches to order for customers, in a new venture.

Chief executive, Roger Whiteside, said the company would be making "bespoke sandwiches" to tailor to what each individual visitor wants.

Speaking to a group of North East business leaders, he said: "Customers are getting much fussier about food, so it's about having food exactly the way they want it."

Mr Whtieside also said the company was also look at investing in digital technology so it could improve customer service.

He went on: "There are all sorts of opportunities that digital channels open up for us. And right at the heart of that is customer loyalty. The winners in retail in the future will be those who know the names of the customers they're dealing with."

We guess it's no surprise they're now pushing us towards their app, then.

But, hey, if it offers free breakfast, we're on board!
