Experts Say Diet Drinks Are Just As Bad For Us As Sugary Drinks

So many of us opt for diet drinks in a bid to cut calories and ultimately be a bit healthier, however drinking diet drinks could be as bad as drinking their sugary counterparts, experts claim.

According to a new report, drinking diet soda raises the risk of gaining weight, type two diabetes, dementia and strokes among adults in the US.

The panel of doctors and researchers said that children are more at risk of disease because drinking diet drinks from a young age because it's a habit that's likely to follow them through the rest of their lives.

Experts are now claiming it's more vital than ever that consumers in the US lay off the diet drinks to curb the epidemic leading to soaring obesity rates, diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers.

The report, by the American Heart Association, said that diet drinks are often used by people who drink lots of sugar-sweetened beverages as a way to wean themselves off.

"This approach may be particularly helpful for individuals who are habituated to a sweet-tasting beverage and for whom water, at least initially, is not a desirable option."

Dr Alice Lichtenstein said: "We hear a lot about potential adverse effects of low-calorie sweeteners, but much of it is speculation. We have to go with the available evidence. The best advice we can give at this time is to ramp down intake and avoid excess consumption."

Looks like we're going to have to find another way to feed that caffeine addiction after all.
