We all love getting our nails done but if you're regularly visiting the salon for gel manicures you could be doing some real damage.

Beauty YouTuber Tina Yong filmed the terrifying truth of the effects shellac has had on her nails.

She's previously filmed videos where she examines her skin, eyes, and eyelashes under a microscope and now after years of gel manicures she's put her nails under examination.

She said in the video: "I always have gel nail polish on my hands. It has been about five or six years. I don't even use normal nail polish. So it's time to see what my nail beds, cuticles and even underneath my nails look like."

When she ran the digital microscope over her nails she was shocked at what she found.

She can be heard saying: "Oh my god, that's so bad. Look at my ring finger! There's so much fluff and little hairs stuck underneath."

But that was just the beginning.

She continued: "And how much dead skin do I have underneath my nails? It looks like Ice Age! It's like lots of icebergs around my cuticles."

Tina explained to her 2.4 million subscribers how her nails always "look scratched and thin" after removing her gel manicure.

Now Tina could see where her "nails have been lifted and peeled off because of the gel polish."

Tina also noticed that her nails had now turned a distinct shade of light yellow. She said: "My nails have never been that white colour, they've always been an off white, or sometimes a yellow-y colour like this. You can see all that dead skin underneath. And because I've soaked it in acetone, it looks even worse."

The video has been viewed 244,551 times and Tina's followers were shocked at the state of her nails with one person commenting: "This is SO GROSSSSSS BUT I CANT STOP WATCHINGGG LOL so creepy tooo."

Another person said: "After this video i washed my hands a hundred times."

A third person added: "Thank you Tina for showing this video. I hope this will encourage people with gel or acrylic nails, to have a proper nail treatment, instead of refilling over and over."

Tina concluded the video by saying that we all need to "give our fingers a big scrub" and she was off to 'put a lot of cuticle oil' on her talons.

Good idea.
